National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June and the theme this year is, Now More Than Ever.
The NRW dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.
27 May 1967
On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.
3 June 1992
On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’, leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands.
NRW is led by Reconciliation Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the national organisation responsible for building and promoting reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. Reconciliation Australia creates a theme for National Reconciliation Week each year.
Reconciliation WA works with Reconciliation Australia and the other State reconciliation peak bodies to lead National Reconciliation Week activities in Western Australia. Thousands of workplaces, schools, early learning services, universities, councils, and more organise their own private or public activities for National Reconciliation Week.
Thanks to the support from the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries as well as the sponsorship of participating organisations, hundreds of Reconciliation Week banners are flying proud and high in prominent locations across Western Australia for NRW.
The banners feature Noongar artist Darryl Dempster, ‘Snake Nest’. 'Snake Nest' blends traditional symbolism with contemporary art, celebrating the importance of family, nurturing, and the natural world. It reminds us of the beauty in shared experiences and the enduring ties that connect us all. Through this artwork, Darryl Dempster honours motherhood and invites us to reflect on the bonds that unite us.
We’re excited to offer our 2025 collection of merchandise showcasing Darryl Dempster’s artwork. The collection includes tea towels, tote bags, gift cards, lanyards and posters. Funds from each sale go directly to Darryl Dempster and support 2025 NRW programming.
Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support for the artist and the reconciliation movement.
There are so many ways to get your schools, classes and students to learn about reconciliation and join in on National Reconciliation Week 2025, including:
- Join the 11:30am (for children up to age 12 and guardians/teachers) or 1pm (for age 13+ and adults) walk wave at our Galup | Lake Monger Walk for Reconciliation on Tuesday 3 June
- Download our special National Reconciliation Week 2025 education resource list and booklist.
- Participate in our ReconciliACTION card activity and have your students tell us their reconciliation dream for Australia!
- Join the livestream into our Walyalup (Fremantle) Breakfast on Tuesday 27 May, and then take your class through a mat time story session for the little kids, or a reconciliation history lesson for the bigger kids.
Reconciliation WA commit to creating an accessible NRW program of events for everyone around the state, no matter where you live and work.
We are pleased to be holding events this year in regional areas, including a Reconciliation Breakfast event in Nyiyaparli Country (Newman) on Tuesday 27 May, and a Reconciliation Walk in Goomburrup (Bunbury) and Port Hedland on Tuesday 3 June.
The majority of our events including the Reconciliation Breakfast, screening of Genocide in the Wildflower State, Reconciliation Memoirs, Reconciliation Truth Forum are all available for online registrations so you can livestream on the day

This year you can watch the Reconciliation Breakfast Walyalup (Fremantle) live on NITV or stream on SBS On Demand.

About National Reconciliation Week
National Reconciliation Week – 27 May to 3 June every year – is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to recommit ourselves to reconciliation and the fight for First Nations justice in Australia.
Learn more about the theme Bridging Now to Next #NRW2025
The National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2025 theme, Bridging Now to Next, reflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next urges us to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us. At a time when Australia faces uncertainty in its reconciliation journey, this theme calls on all Australians to step forward together. In the #NRW2025 theme artwork created by Kalkadoon woman Bree Buttenshaw, native plants – known for regenerating after fire and thriving through adversity − symbolise our collective strength and the possibilities of renewal. This is a time for growth, reflection, and commitment to walking together. Australia’s history of reconciliation is not a linear one but one that includes both great strides and disappointing setbacks. Twenty-five years ago, Corroboree 2000 brought together Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous leaders in a historic call for reconciliation. We continue that work in 2025, inviting all Australians to join us in Bridging Now to Next – building a more united and respectful nation. Corroboree 2000 and the Sydney Harbour Bridge walk were significant events in our long journey and our determination to continue that journey towards a reconciled Australia and justice for First Nations peoples is unstoppable. The #NRW2025 theme was created in collaboration with Little Rocket, a First Nations owned and operated marketing and creative agency.
