Year 4 Reconciliation in Education Program

How do you teach about Aboriginal histories and Cultures in your school or classroom?

The program offers schools a fully facilitated, authentic, and HASS curriculum-aligned incursion or excursion which helps you address the cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and Cultures.

This program is proudly supported by:

In the spirit of reconciliation the program is co-facilitated by an Aboriginal person with cultural knowledge and a non-Aboriginal ally.

The program begins with an Acknowledgement of Country and explores the meaning behind the respectful practice. Maps, flags, and a ball of time activity are used to talk about the diversity and longevity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and Cultures in Australia.

The lesson compares the Westminster law system in Australia with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Lore systems.

Building on Civics and Citizenship understanding.

Hands on resources are used to strengthen students’ knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal identities, histories and Cultures in their local area.

Students learn about and are guided through a yarning circle and symbol drawing, with a few students able to try on a Booka – a Yonga (kangaroo) skin cloak.

The students then reflect on what they have learned during the lesson and consider how they can contribute to reconciliation as they complete a Reconciliation Action Card.
