National Reconciliation Week 2024

National Reconciliation Week 2024

27 May – 3 June | #NRW2024

We’re calling upon all West Australians, no matter where you live or work, to join in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and get involved in National Reconciliation Week (NRW) 2024 – coming up from 27 May to 3 June.

The theme for NRW 2024, Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue.

To get involved and show your support, there’s an exciting program of in-person and online events happening right across Perth and regional WA over the course of the week.

Tickets are now on sale (and selling fast!) with affordable ticket price options available. Please see below.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June and the theme this year is, Now More Than Ever.

The NRW dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

27 May 1967
On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.

3 June 1992
On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’, leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands.

NRW is led by Reconciliation Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the national organisation responsible for building and promoting reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. Reconciliation Australia creates a theme for National Reconciliation Week each year.

Reconciliation WA works with Reconciliation Australia and the other State reconciliation peak bodies to lead National Reconciliation Week activities in Western Australia. Thousands of workplaces, schools, early learning services, universities, councils, and more organise their own private or public activities for National Reconciliation Week.

Sorry Day occurs each year on the 26 of May, and while it is not an official part of Reconciliation Week, we encourage all our supporters to learn more about Sorry Day and find out how they can get involved.

WA Aboriginal Stolen Generations and Yokai will be hosting a free commemoration event at Wellington Square in East Perth on 26 May 2024. This will also be broadcasted online. Find out more.

We welcome expression of interest from organisations to volunteer for our NRW 2024 program, particularly for the Walk for Reconciliation. Please contact our People and Operations Manager Steve Martin with your approximate number of volunteers and preferred event.

The Reconciliation Memoirs, the Reconciliation Yarns and the Reconciliation Breakfast are all available for online registrations so you can livestream on the day. A recording of the Reconciliation Breakfast in Boorloo (Perth) will be made available following the event.

There are so many ways to get your schools, classes and students to learn about reconciliation and join in on National Reconciliation Week 2024, including:

  • Join sessions at our Education Zone at our Boorloo (Perth) Walk on Friday 31 May
  • Download our special National Reconciliation Week 2024 education resource list and booklist
  • Participate in our ReconciliACTION card activity and have your students tell us their reconciliation dream for Australia!
  • Join the livestream into our Boorloo (Perth) Breakfast on Monday 27 May, and then take your class through a mat time story session for the little kids, or a
reconciliation history lesson for the bigger kids.

Reconciliation WA commit to creating an accessible NRW program for everyone around the State, no matter where you live and work.

We are pleased to be holding many events this year in regional areas, including Breakfast events in Albany, Karratha and Newman on Monday 27 May, and Reconciliation Walks in Bunbury and Port Hedland on Friday 31 May.

The majority of our events (our Breakfasts, Memoirs and Yarns) this year include digital access opportunities. Most importantly, we invite everyone in the State who may not be able to make one of our in-person events, to create their own watch party and tune into the flagship Reconciliation Breakfast, live from Boorloo (Perth) on Monday 27 May.

The NRW 2024 Guide and Digital Kit are your best resources for National Reconciliation Week planning. Check out the Guide for a rundown of all the events taking place this year, with some helpful suggestions for getting involved – no matter where you live or work. Our Digital Kit includes a whole stack of resources to refer to, from educational resources and cultural engagement guides, to printable and social media templates.
