National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June and the theme this year is, "ALL IN" (learn more here).

The NRW dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

27 May 1967

On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.

3 June 1992

On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’, leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands.

NRW is led by Reconciliation Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the national organisation responsible for building and promoting reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. Reconciliation Australia creates a theme for National Reconciliation Week each year.

Reconciliation WA works with Reconciliation Australia and the other State reconciliation peak bodies to lead National Reconciliation Week activities in Western Australia. Thousands of workplaces, schools, early learning services, universities, councils, and more organise their own private or public activities for National Reconciliation Week.

Check out the Guide for a rundown of all the events taking place this year, with some helpful suggestions for getting involved – no matter where you live or work. Catch the train

Trains are now stopping at Optus Stadium precinct, seven days a week. Plan your journey with the Transperth Journey Planner - https://www.transperth.wa.gov.au/

Catch the bus to Matagarup Bridge

Passengers can catch the free Red CAT bus service and walk over the Matagarup Bridge to get to the Stadium.

Parking

Free guest parking is available on the Northern Oval. Please refer to the map for directions on how to get there. ACROD bays are located in Marlee Loop, there are some bays available on a first come first served basis.

Taxi or Rideshare

A dedicated taxi rank is located adjacent to Victoria Park Drive.

Taxi or rideshare eg. Ola or Uber vehicles, can pick up or drop off passengers in the Marlee Loop car park on non-event days.

Located on Level 3 of Optus Stadium, please use entry Gate C and follow signage to direct you to the River View Rooms. You will experience a smoking ceremony on arrival before entering the building.

Most importantly, we invite everyone in the state who may not be able to make one of our in-person events to create their own and tune into the flagship Reconciliation Breakfast, live from Optus Stadium in Boorloo on Wednesday, 27 May.

Reconciliation WA commit to creating an accessible NRW program of events for everyone around the state, no matter where you live and work.

We are pleased to be holding events this year in regional areas, including a Reconciliation Breakfast event in  Nyiyaparli Country (Newman) on Tuesday 27 May, and a Reconciliation Walk in Goomburrup (Bunbury) and Port Hedland on Tuesday 3 June.

The majority of our events including the Reconciliation Breakfast, screening of Genocide in the Wildflower State, Reconciliation Memoirs, Reconciliation Truth Forum are all available for online registrations so you can livestream on the day

Livestream links for Memoirs, Truth Forum and Genocide in the Wild Flower State are expected to be available by mid-May. Please note, this is subject to change, so stay tuned for updates.

This year you can watch the Reconciliation Breakfast Walyalup (Fremantle) live on NITV or stream on SBS On Demand. 

Most importantly, we invite everyone in the state who may not be able to make one of our in-person events, to create their own watch party and tune into the flagship Reconciliation Breakfast, live from Walyalup (Fremantle) on Tuesday 27 May.

The Boorloo (Perth) Walk for Reconciliation on Thursday 30 October is taking place at Galup (Lake Monger) . There will be 3 ‘Waves” scheduled:

Wave #1: 11.30am—12:30pm—For children up to age 12 and their guardians/teachers/families. Please note: This wave does not include a walk, but it does feature engaging activities for children, including storytelling, chalk drawing, and a song.

• The event starts at 11:30am at the stage area (number 1 on the map).
• Please also see the attached map for bus drop-off along Gregory Street. Please ensure you arrive with sufficient time to make your way from your transport to the stage area for the start of the event.
• The event commences with a stage presentation that will run for 30 minutes and includes a Welcome to Country, song and word games.
• From there, children and guardians will be invited to participate in a chalk mural drawing on a footpath nearby (see the blue Wave 1 dotted line on the map), as designed by Aboriginal artist, Jade Dolman.
• For the next 30 minutes, the children can participate in the chalk drawing activity. It will be next to a grassed area where children are welcome to sit and have lunch and take turns drawing.
• Please remember to wear a sun hat and sunscreen. Bring your own water bottles to refill at the Water Station.
• Are you coming on your school bus – please be sure to register it so that we have a waiting space for the bus nearby at the Gold Netball Centre.

Wave #2: 1pm - 2 to 2:30pm (approximate - depending on walking pace). 1km walk for age 13+ and adults

• The event starts at 1pm at the stage area (number 1 on the map).
• Please ensure you arrive with sufficient time to make your way from your transport to the stage area for the start of the event. Shuttle buses will be dropping off on Gregory Street. Please see the map to gauge your walking distance.
• The event commences with a stage presentation that will run for around 40 minutes and includes a Welcome to Country, speakers, and song.
• A Smoking Ceremony will follow as walkers head off on their route.
• At the end of the walk there will be opportunity to share some reflections in chalk on a designated footpath.
• Please remember to wear a sun hat and sunscreen. Bring your own water bottle to refill at the Water Station or water fountains.
• Are you coming on your own chartered bus – please be sure to register it so that we have a waiting space for the bus nearby at the Gold Netball Centre.

Wave #3: 2.30pm – 3:30pm to 4:30pm (approximate - depending on walking pace). 1km or a 3.5km walk for age 13+ and adults

• The event starts at 2:30pm at the stage area (number 1 on the map).
• Please ensure you arrive with sufficient time to make your way from your transport to the stage area for the start of the event. Shuttle buses will be dropping off on Gregory Street. Please see the map to gauge your walking distance.

We recommend bringing a broad brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and wet weather gear if it is likely to rain. The Walk for Reconciliation events will proceed rain, hail or shine! Where bad weather is a safety issue, and we are forced to cancel the event due to safety, communication will be provided via Reconciliation WA social media pages and attendees who have registered will be informed by email in advance.

Wear comfortable walking shoes. There will be an opportunity to participate in planting a native plants seedling to support the regeneration of the area.  Feel free to bring gardening gloves if you wish. Otherwise, toilets will be available for handwashing. Please don’t forget to also bring your own water bottle, as we will have water refill stations available.

To manage crowd density, attendees are requested to register online prior to the event (see links below). Registrations on the day will not be available.

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories and cultures and to think about how we can each contribute to achieving a more inclusive Australia. NRW includes important anniversaries like the 1967 Referendum (27 May) and Mabo Day (3 June), which mark key moments in Australia’s reconciliation journey.

National Reconciliation Week features events, educational resources, and community initiatives aimed at building unity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians and to build awareness of shared histories, culture and achievements. Melissa Sunfly artwork - Murrunpa

MS (Melissa is often referred to as MS) has painted a story from her late grandfather - a famous Balgo artist.

Melissa Sunfly has depicted a story from her late grandfather, Sunfly. This story was shared to her by her grandfather and only family can paint this particular story. The men's law ground Melissa has depicted is out on Sunfly's country, Murrunpa. The circles Melissa has painted represent the law ground, and the dotted lines surrounding the law ground represent sand hills (tali).

In the Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) two men were walking around hunting together near Yagga Yagga. The men then went to sleep behind their windbreak (wiltja). They slept on a tali (sandhill) with a fire between them. This country belongs to Melissa's grandfather Sunfly Tjampitjin and Grandmother, Bai Bai Napangarti.

Each year, the National Reconciliation Week Street Banner Program showcases an artwork by an Aboriginal artist from Western Australia. This year, we’re pleased to feature work by Melissa Sunfly, whose art celebrates the stories, strength, and spirit of Aboriginal culture.

The journey will feature a Welcome to Country and key speakers before the commencement of the Walk, with multiple Smoking Ceremony fire pits for the walkers to pass through. Together we will walk alongside the bilya (river) through the park and ending in solidarity at the Supreme Court Gardens with various activations and guest performers.

An NRW Education Zone will support schools and young people with reconciliation engagement and activities. Please note our Education Zone runs over three waves, so please choose a timing that suits your school! PLEASE NOTE: These sessions are designed for 4-12 year-olds  along with guardians/teachers.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW are the same each year; 27 May to 3 June and the theme this year is, Now More Than Ever.

The NRW dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

27 May 1967
On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.

3 June 1992
On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’, leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands.

NRW is led by Reconciliation Australia. Reconciliation Australia is the national organisation responsible for building and promoting reconciliation between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. Reconciliation Australia creates a theme for National Reconciliation Week each year.

Reconciliation WA works with Reconciliation Australia and the other State reconciliation peak bodies to lead National Reconciliation Week activities in Western Australia. Thousands of workplaces, schools, early learning services, universities, councils, and more organise their own private or public activities for National Reconciliation Week.
