National Reconciliation Week (NRW) Breakfast
The National Reconciliation Week 2026 Breakfast was held at Optus Stadium, Boorloo (Perth), with breakfast broadcast events in Kinjarling (Albany), Nyiyparli (Newman) and online via NITV or SBS On Demand.
This year’s breakfast was led by accomplished hosts Karla Hart and Levi Islam, and highlighted by a powerful keynote address from Narelda Jacobs, which received a standing ovation. A beautiful performance by the Yidaki Group and Rickeeta Walley opened the event, followed by a moving Welcome to Country from Uncle Richard Walley. Addresses from Reconciliation WA’s co-chair Nolan Hunter, Premier Roger Cook, and Hon. Chris Dawson were interspersed with informative videos about Travis Lovett’s National Walk for Truth, WA’s Bicentennial Journey from Kinarling | Albany 2026 to 2029, and Place-based Reconciliation in the South West.
Embodying this year’s National Reconciliation Week theme, ALL IN for Reconciliation, the newly formed Reconciliation WA Choir was one of the standout moments of the 2026 Breakfast Broadcast. Created in partnership with Reconciliation WA and mother-and-son choir directors Della Rae and Kobi Arthur Morrison of Madjitil Moorna, the choir brought together 30 community members from across Boorloo. What began as a series of rehearsals quickly became an opportunity to build connections, share stories and experience the joy of coming together through music.
For the performance, the choir presented Midnight Oil’s Beds Are Burning, a song selected by Reconciliation Australia and specially translated into Noongar by Noongar language educator Kobi Arthur Morrison. A song that has long carried messages of protest, action and justice, it took on new meaning when sung in the language of the Traditional Owners of this Country. In doing so, the choir celebrated the strength and continuity of Noongar language and culture while bringing the song’s message home to Country.
The Reconciliation WA Choir is one of more than 700 choirs that came together as part of Reconciliation Australia’s Voices For Reconciliation.

Reconciliation WA also hosted regional NRW breakfast events in Kinjarling (Albany) and Nyiyparli (Newman), with plans to expand the regional reach over the next few years. The Kinjarling breakfast broadcast event was followed by a landmark reconciliation moment for the State and Nation, with the launch of Australia’s first place-based Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The Great Southern RAP has been co-designed alongside the local community to support genuine self-determination. Built through the longstanding partnership between Reconciliation WA and Reconciliation Australia, this initiative sets a powerful precedent for embedding reconciliation across diverse communities. Reconciliation Memoirs with June Oscar AO
The iconic Hackett Hall at WA Museum Boola Bardip was a beautiful setting for Reconciliation Memoirs with June Oscar in conversation with Victoria Laurie. Sitting in the halls of the former state library reading rooms and archive, we listened to June reflect on her life’s work, the challenges and triumphs of advocacy, and the future of reconciliation in Western Australia.
June Oscar AO is an Indigenous rights advocate, community health and welfare champion, filmmaker, and former Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission (2017–2025). A proud Bunuba leader, her work, both in her Kimberley community and nationally, has helped shape the lives of many, particularly First Nations women and girls whose voices she continues to elevate.
June’s memoir speaks to a lifelong commitment to her people, her Country and the pursuit of justice. It is available to purchase at the Reconciliation WA Merchandise Store.
